A long dist platonic friend told that he had just found out that he contracted HIV?

last summer. He told me recently that he is losing weight, has lesions,and the meds are not working and only has months to live. He is distancing himself from me. I am confused-if he is this ill-would he still be able to work or would he need constant care???? It is horrible to say, but apart of me is wondering if he is being honest with me and has HIV.
