What makes people believe that God exists?

I'm not trying to be a stupid bigot about this, but as I begin looking through the newspapers these days, more and more things happen these days that makes you wonder if there really is a higher benevolent being up there. Since I am an Atheist, I would like to know what allows one to believe that god exists and helps people to this day despite all the horrible world events going on.
