Why do people compare Christianity with The Crusades or Atheism with the Holocaust?

the lesson is that humanity is capable of great evil, and without religion it gets even worse. atheists are just in denial "stalin wasn't a TRUE atheist" "north korea is actually religious" what a bunch of jokers they can't see they are commiting the same fallacies they point out to others.
